The use of new psychoactive substances (NPS) among prisoners appears to be a rapidly developing phenomenon. But empirical data are currently scarce and patchy. A recent study suggests that synthetic cannabinoids are the most common group of NPS used in prison. Methods for bringing NPS into prisons are similar to those used for established drugs, while other methods appear to have been specifically developed for the supply of NPS.
