In celebration of the European Day of Languages, we are delighted to unveil the online EMCDDA multilingual glossary of drug-related terms, a practical resource aimed at ensuring high-quality and comparable content on drug-related topics in Europe.
This terminology project, which started in 2010, is a collaborative endeavour involving the EMCDDA, the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union (CdT) and the national focal points of the Reitox network. Its primary aim is to support the consistent use of terminology in EMCDDA reports and outputs, maintaining linguistic precision across multiple language versions.
Originally available in all EU official languages, plus Norwegian and Turkish, the glossary has recently been expanded to include Arabic, Georgian and Russian to support our international cooperation activities. At the end of 2023, the glossary will count around 200 terms and definitions. These are available in the EU's terminology management system 'Interactive Terminology for Europe' (IATE).
IATE gives professionals, researchers, translators and anybody interested in our work the ability to search into all languages to find EMCDDA preferred usage and meaning.
IATE has been used in the EU institutions and agencies since 2004 for the collection, dissemination and management of terminology. The project was launched in 1999 with the aim of providing a web-based infrastructure for all EU terminology resources, enhancing the availability and standardisation of the information. It is free to use.
Multilingualism lies at the heart of the EU. On this European Day of Languages, we reaffirm our commitment to linguistic diversity and to the dissemination of information on drugs to all European citizens in their mother tongue.
