Ethical research guidelines for wastewater-based epidemiology and related fields

Summary

This document, published in 2016 by the Sewage Analysis Core group Europe (SCORE) in 2016, presents ethical guidelines for undertaking wastewater-based epidemiology and related techniques. The objective of these guidelines is to outline the main potential ethical risks in wastewater research and to propose strategies to mitigate those risks. Although primarily used to study trends in illicit drug consumption in the general population, wastewater analysis has also been applied to small communities, including workplaces, schools, music festivals, prisons and specific neighbourhoods. Using this method in small communities can involve ethical risks, such as potentially identifying a particular group within the community.
